Gladioli

Hope someone can help... I brought in some gladiolus bulbs to dry out before storing them for the winter. Well, they are getting soft, not rotting, but just soft to the touch instead of firm. Never saw that before, what's up? Also, some dahlia roots (tubers?) are withering fast, they were plump a few days ago. Thanks for your help! John

One of the secrets to preventing the dahlia bulbs from drying, recommended by several gardeners, is placing a couple of layers of dampened newspaper on the surface of the packing material or lightly misting the surface of the packing material with water before storing. After several weeks, check to see if tubers show signs of shrinking, and if so, repeat the damp paper or misting trick.

the tubers are in an atmosphere that is too dry. store them in damp - not moist or wet - sawdust or peat. make sure there is enough room so they are just below the surface. keep them in a room/garage that is frost free. You dont want them in room that is too warm as they wont stay dormant for long.
