Inside bloomer
Aztec Lily
I just bought 1 of these. Do they make babies easy? Yours are beautiful.
Mine have proliferated quite well. I got my originals quite some time ago. after their first season of bloom they were overwintered in basement and bloomed the next season, after that I started re-potting seasonally noting all the well fomed off-spring, but, alas, the blooming ceased. I continued to set them outside in pots and haven't messed with them otherwise, the last couple of years they've resumed blooming.
Thanks so very much for the info. Very much appreciated.
I overwinter a multitude of tender bulbs in the basement; by late May these containers are usually re-potted and moved outside. Then the transplanting of a lot of rooted coleus starts (done under fluorescents in basement) is the next big task. I'd moved most containers out and have actively been putting coleus' into the garden. I'd not accessed the basement for a couple of days...the other night I went down to check the status of the remaining starts...imagine my amazement to find this:
jmorth did you start out with most of those Aztec lilies or do they produce offsets every year? I just bought 1 bulb and it has 2 bloom spikes coming up. I was wondering if they reproduce really easily.
jmorth,
How do you do it??? I bought a few bulbs many years ago and not one have bloomed!!!! I have some in the ground and placed couple in a pot in the garage this past winter and still nothing!
Do these have to be certain size bulbs to bloom? Do you fertilize?
Sandy, how big is your bulb? Two spikes...I'm so jealous!
Betsy
I just got it from Brent and Becky's at there 1/2 price sale for 2 something. Wish I would have bought 3 of the. It is the size of a large daffodil bulb. I really hope it multiplies.
Betsy I have had what is (if I remember right) Amaryllis Belladonna from a trade over 10 yrs ago and they have never bloomed. They have reproduced very well but no blooms. I am going to thin them out as they are in pots and start fertilizing them and see what happens. 75% of my Amaryllis did not bloom this year so I am fertilizing them with a weak solution of Miracle Grow to see what happens. Do your Aztec lilies make offsets easily?
Have a great day everyone!!!
Sandy
I fertilize periodically, probably 2 or 3 times over the summer months. I seem to get blooms in the years I've left them in situ instead of re-potting.
I know I read this year that Amaryllis like to be root bound. Maybe these do too. Thanks!!!!
Here is a picture of the bulb with my hand to compare size. But look at the stem....I think it was the darn (want to use a stronger word) devoured the flower and the next picture shows the bites out of the stem. I was wrong about it being the size of a lg daffodil bulb....It is around a 1/2 size larger than a daffodil bulb.
My Aztec lily bloomed for the first time in a couple of years. I ordered it online but do not remember from where. It has multiplied but not fast. I was pleasantly surprised to see a bloom this year! I bought some yellow summer daffodils at the same time and they have never bloomed. I leave them in the pot and over winter them in a root cellar.
Here is my one Aztec Lily bloom!
Several years ago I got Aztec Lily bulbs at a local plant sale. Usually I'd just set them out in the Spring and dig them again in the Fall. Mine seem to make about 2 babies per plant each year. This year I put them in pots so they can be up front when blooming and set further back afterwards. I did read somewhere that they hate being moved around. Only one bloomed this summer. I'm hoping for better luck next year. I'm wondering if one could plant them too deep.
I left 1/3 of mine above ground like Amaryllis. If they are like Amaryllis they can be planted too deep. But someone who knows more than me will chime in soon. :)
Sandy, so sorry about your bloom...
Well, mine has done nothing...I guess I'll try to fertilize them.
Debbie, so jealous!!!!
Thanks, I have alot of Amaryllis and only about 6 bloomed. I need to fertilize also.
Jack, those are lovely!!! I may have to find a bulb or two.
KJ,
Hope you've been having a wonderful summer. Before long the season will be closing up here. Gloriosas are still productive and I anticipate a burst of bloom about Sept. 1st from Autumn Clematis, and a Dahlias' presentation...then, for me, the last annual big event...New England Aster Butterfly Magnet Show.
