Question on fertility of pollen and seeds of some cultivars

Kenner, LA

Hi,

I have a few cultivars (some known some unknown) and I am trying to determine which ones have fertile pollen and/or seed capabilities. I want to try to cross pollinate them and see what I can get.

Here are the ones whose name I know:
1. Mrs. Jimmy Spangler
2. Cajun Hibiscus Creole Lady
3. Cajun Hibiscus Light My Fire
4. Cajun Hibiscus Dixieland
5. Cajun Hibiscus Cajun Sunset
6. Cajun Hibiscus Cajun Blue

I also have two other whose name I don't know. One is a red tropical that I got from Walmart and another is a Pink that I got from a local Nursery (Bantings on River Road, for those who are in the New Orleans area). The links below shows the photos of the pink cultivar.

* Edit - The pink is Seminole Pink. Thanks to Lake Fred for that info.

I don't have a photo or a link for the red one, so unless someone had experience with Hibs bought from Wallymart, I don't expect anything on it.

Thank you for your time.

I know for sure that Cajun Blue it a seed setter and has good pollen. The others Im not too sure of... The red you speak of.... could be a couple of things. I had one called Baja Breeze, a mini red that had a great bush and plenty of blooms. Call it a garden variety. This breeze and wind collection is from one hybridizer and is common in the box stores. If it is the same one, it did set seed and give pollen.

Thank you for the info.

President and Brilliant are also single red garden varieties. If you ahve either of those, they're both great for pollination and pollinating.

I wish I had the tags on the red. Thanks Barb for the info.

Look them up in the International Hibiscus Society's website. http://www.internationalhibiscussociety.org/
Click on The Global Hibiscus List (on the left) and from the drop down list, click on Search Engine.
There you'll be able to search using bloom color, etc.
i use it a lot to find out the parentage of my cultivars.

Thank you Barb for the link. Much appreciated.

Have been told by 3 people who do a lot of hybridizing that Light My Fire is a "must have" hibiscus for making babies. One of them got a seed pod with over 30 seeds. Definitely bought one on their recommendations. Too hot to try & had my 1st bloom yesterday so will let you know after the weather cools off......next Nov. :-(

Hugs,

Thanks Judy. All my hibs are struggling under the heat now, so I will have to concentrate on trying to save them for now. Like you said, will have to wait till much later to try to hybridize.
