Oak leaves

Tampa, FL

Well as I have stated in my last thread I am brand new to worms or composting so I will be having lots of questions hopefully not to many stupid ones.

I have 5 grandfather oaks in my yard and was wondering if the oak leaves will work for the worms I know oaks can be very acidic, that's why the azaleas love them.

welcome aboard skypower !!!!
i think actually all leaves are ok..i use to read/hear that walnut leaves werent..but i think thats not so..
i do avoid them..just collect all other leaves.. old habits die hard..:)
i use oak leaves all the time..some in my worm composting..but more in my outdoor compost pile..
but where you are in fl.. and im guessing doing outside composting..u will be just fine..
make sure to put your worms in a shaded area..they wont like your hot summer weather..
good luck to ya.. :)

Skypower, do you grind your oak leaves with a lawn mower or grinder before adding them to your compost pile and have you considered adding kitchen scraps to your leaf pile if that's the method you are using for composting? My sister lives in Florida and I know how hot it gets there in the summer. As Dave mentions a shaded area is always best in your area for a leaf pile, however you should invest in a potato or pitch fork if you don't have one, and turn the pile periodically adding water as you do. Leaf piles can get really hot but red wigglers are pretty adaptable.
