Anyone from west Texas

Abilene, TX(Zone 7b)

I'm new to the Texas forum. I've read a lot of posts from folks in the Metroplex, Houston area, San Antonio and Austin. Anyone out there from a little further west? I'm looking for small shrub that can handle mostly shade. My problem is that it does get a few hours of sun, but it's afternoon, not morning. I'm planning on planting it under a Natchez white crepe myrtle. It eventually may get all shade as the crepe myrtle gets bigger.

What zone are you? I have similar conditions and have Texas Scarlet Quince. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/82762/
It stays green all year for me. I have had it for 4-5 years and it is about 2 feet high and 4 feet wide
