Am I supposed to fertilize my potatoes in Grow Bags?

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

I planted two types of potatoes in grow bags; Norland and Kennebec. I put 3 seed potatoes in each grow bag and used regular potting soil w/o fertilizer added. I started them at about 6-8" and have just recently added another 6" of soil. Everything seems to be growing well but I realized there is no fertilizer in there. Should I add some now and what kind would be best?

Here's a pic of my taters.

Hey, Toni!

You've got great growth there. I've only grown one season before in potato bags, with good success (although a small harvest due to the type of potatoes I was growing in my area). I recall using good organic amendments up front (some homemade compost and leaf mold), but I never fertilized during the growing process.

I believe I read somewhere that they don't need a lot of fert. You might wanna add a small bit of compost to your next hilling or some decomposed leaves.

Thanks Gymgirl, this is my first time with grow bags, actually my first time with potatoes too! I totally forgot about adding compost or any organic granular fertilizer when I started b/c I was so excited about trying something new. I've got compost so I'll throw in a couple handfuls and hope for the best!
