I just bought a new hibiscus named Jazzberry Jam, beautiful dark pink. My qusetion is do they have the same characteristics of a Rose of Sharon? The same height and width? They are so pretty I want to place it in the correct spot I am "acerage" challanged! lol. Really have to place newbies in the right spot, I do not like moving plants after they are established. Just any recommendations are greatful, thanks. Ronna
Brand new to these!
Hello,
Welcome to the hibiscus world! It can get addicting so look out. I think how big they grow depends on your conditions. My mother and I both have a Lord and Lady Baltimore plant each. Mine are in an area that get about 6 hours of sun, maybe 7 but thats pushin it. My mothers are in an open field, she lives on the beach, and she gets some pretty good winds. My Lord Baltimore last year was over 7 feet tall. My mom's was about 3-4 feet. Both bloomed a ton. But I think because of her winds and abundant sunshine, hers were much stouter. Also, I had to stake mine as they were so tall, they wanted to fall over. Hers was like a football player. The winds really beefed up the stalks.
Good luck,
Kristen
Hello, Kristen. Thanks so much for your reply I appreciate it very much. Mine would only get from around 2 oclock to dusk which is about 8:30. Would that be enough to make it bloom? My rose of sharons get the morning sun only and they seem to do fine. Just wondering. Ronna
I bought that hibiscus last summer and it is a BEAUTIFUL one, so great pick.. Your going to just love it.. I even managed to get one seed pod off of it, sadly its not one that seeds easily.. Mine gets sun from about noon on.. I get a bunch of flowers. last year i only had one stem, i think theres 8 coming up this year.. its going to be nice this year.. So if yours get sun from 2 on your going to be just fine.. I have hardy hibiscus that grow in pretty much all shade, there not that picky.. Just keep them watered and it will bloom some of the nicest flowers..
Here's some info on it: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/176029/ It's a different species of Hibiscus than Rose of Sharon so it'll be a different size/shape. The other thing to know about this one is that it will die back every winter and then resprout in the spring, but hardy hibiscus have a reputation for being really slow to pop up again in the spring so next year when it's May and you haven't seen it come up yet, don't panic.
Yes and no on the late to grow.. last year i only had one when the season started and wow i though for sure i killed it.. it was june before i seen any life.. and my mom who bought herself one the same didnt come up for 2 weeks after mine did.. she even bought a new one to replace it, so she ended up with 2.. But then this year they were growing before my hydrangeas, now there as 8-12" where my hydrangeas are only 4-6" also my iris are only about 12" and still no flowers.. Our season is all messed up, things that would of bloomed before i even planted my canna bulbs are just growing now and i've planted my cannas weeks ago.. But then things that shouldn't be coming up till now are bigger then the rest of my stuff.. Maybe has something to do with the rain we've had, or the not so hot weather who knows..
Well you just gotta love this site. Ask for help and boom immediatley you have lots. I really appreciate the posts. I think it will do good alos. Am looking forward to this blossoming probably next year? right now it is only two little twigs! Smurf428 how wide did yours get this year? I have limited space and am worried about this. Can you prune them if they get out of hand? Just wondering! Thanks again, Ronna
mine last year was only one stick and it was about 2-3 feet tall. this year theres 7 sticks i believe coming up. Its a foot high right now. I dont think it gets more then 3 feet tall, i dont remember what the tag said. I know most make a bush about 2 feet wide and the same high.. I would bet money on it you'll get flowers this year.
Yeah. If it does then darn I might just have to dig up around it and plant some more stuff. lol. Oh know not another garden;) So bummed.
