My Crawl Space Green House...2011

Downers Grove, IL(Zone 5a)

I decided that instead of buying my vegetables every year from the local Home Depot I wanted to start my own seeds. Well my problem is I do not have the room in my house and an idea popped into my head! I have a lower crawl space that does not really get used, why not turn it into a green house. Now granted I have to walk thru it stooped over but how many times do I need to look at the plants other then to water and see if they are ready to be transplanted. So I went out and purchased 2 plug in shop lights, bright and soft flourescent bulbs and a timer and went to work. I have to admit it was a success! I started at the end of March (yellow pear tomatoes and better boy hybred) and in April I started (7 butternut sqaush(only 3 came up) 4 green and 4 yellow zucchini and 6 cucumbers and with the exception of the butternut had everything come up. ) Next year since I do not have warming pads I will start my squashes and cuc's a tad bit earlier so they are larger when they hit the garden. I will also be using the lights come winter to over winter plants since I never have enough light in my house and next year...with such a success with the vege's I will be hanging a lot more shop lights and starting my own annual flowers for next year as well as veges!!... I am way to excited about this!

What a great idea!

The crawl space under our house is only high enough to be able to crawl around on one's belly! I had to go under there a couple of months ago to find a leaky pipe.

Very nice, congratulations on your success!

What a great idea! I also had a crawlspace in my old house, but it was all dirt and gave me the creeps every time I went down there. DH would be tending to the seedlings if I had done this. ;)
