Mailorder Blue and Salmon babies

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

They're heee-eere. Seemed to take a very long time, but once sent it really didn't, and mine arrived in fine fettle. Both are breeds I've wanted for a long time, and I'll be watching them carefully. I can never tell from thumbnails what's really going to show, but here goes.

Awww Boo Boo Babiez! Love those hairy legs! LOL

Richmond, TX

They have such cute chubby little faces and extra fuzzy feet - irresistible!

Mint Hill, NC(Zone 7b)

So how many Faverolls and how many cochins? Also, are they straight run or all girls?

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Looks like pajama pants.. Love em!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

oh love the blue dot on top of the yellow ones head lol

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

*G* The blue dots are on the Favorelle roolets. There are two of them (they are so beautiful someone's sure to want one), and 5 little Favorelle ladies. The Blue Cochins (also 5) are straight run, but since I like Cochin roos very much, that's okay. They weren't available sexed. Most of the breeds I like sem to come as SR only, so I don't know why the Favorelles were the exception. Not that I'm complaining.
They're all in here (my "office" HAH!), so it's kinda warm, but it means they came go into the growout brooder sooner, if I can bear to part with them. The first year I had chicks I actually had to turn on the AC for them, hope I don't need to again. Tho it IS a good excuse...

Catmad- It was probably easy for the hatchery to pick out the Faverolls roos because they have black feathering when the females don't have any. I picked that up along the way from someone that posts here.

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

Well, that's not good. All mine have some black/dark feathering :(

Mint Hill, NC(Zone 7b)

Catmad- I'm not real sure how they look as week old babies, but my boy had quite a bit when we picked him out at about 4-5 weeks old. The girl was pretty much blond all over when we picked her. I'm sure the hatchery probably did do the official sexing if they did the dot thing. I hope I didn't mess up your thinking about what you've got there....

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

No worries.
Ya know, it doesn't really matter. They're here, and if need be, I'll find them homes. Helps that the Favorelle Roos are so striking *G*.

These are (as best I can figure) 4-5 days, but I'm not that concerned, yet. I've seen the most incredible color changes between hatching and 3-4 months, so I'll just enjoy the baby fuzz:)

In my experience hatcheries are not 100% reliable in their sexing.

Congrats on your new babies! Ya know... now would be a good time to get a few Guineas, they could grow up together. Mostly, I want you to get them because I know your story's would be priceless LOL

Bridgewater, ME

The two with the black in there wings are my baby faverolles from last may. They are girls, the reason for the red spot on there head is they were ordered for me in a shipment and the person had never seen faverolle chicks so they needed a mark on them. They are very timid birds and very friendly.I had a hard time intergrating them into the flock because they were picked on so it took me most of last summer to get them in.They are fine now buy low on the pecking order

My Faverolles seem to be the best natured ones. They follow anyone around just peeping up a storm just for attention. I was able to get the roo to sit on my lap for a few minutes. The female doesn't want to so much...but she is always right around my ankles anytime I'm in the coop. I'm glad the guy talked us into a couple of them. They are really nice birds. I just know you'll like yours as much as I do.

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

Thanks, Green. Mine do seem to be showing black in their wings, so I feel better.

They have to be nice little chicks. The chubby cheeks are the determining factor, I'm sure.

I'm waffling about trying to make them my pals. They will eventually be out in the world, sort of. We've just started adding fencing in some new spots, after recent daytime losses. I want them to be friendly, but both these breeds have fuzzy feet, which makes them more vulnerable, in my sad experience. Maybe if they're not so tame, they'll at least try to run.

I'm thinking...

about guineas, too

Mint Hill, NC(Zone 7b)

Talking about alarms for the chickens, I'm hoping the Canadian geese that are here stick around the house so I can use them as a built in alarm for the chickens when they get to go out of the coop. I can't rely on that every time though they like to go down to the neighbors end of the pond to feed on the hydrilla weeds...

I'm hoping to get some rescue ducks someday soon. I am planning on keeping them in with the chickens. Maybe they will help with the alarm too. I would think the waterfowl rescue would want to adopt out as soon as they can because they get so many dropped off from people buying them for Easter. I was going to buy some myself, but then I remembered that they usually get some after families realize they don't know how to care for them. They usually just drop them off at a lake somewhere. It is really bad for them because they can't survive on just crackers and the correct food they need is not going to be at a man made pond/lake.

Ok sorry for the hijack and rant...back to our regularly scheduled program.

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

Hijack away :). Funny you should mention duckies. These chicks were part of a split order with a friend. Also in the box were his two Cayuga ducklings. Now, for YEARS Joe has taken alternate route to avoid driving past "Baby Ducks For Sale" signs. NO DUCKS!. Okay, I knew I didn't really need anything more to take care of.
So what does he start yesterday? Yeah, you guessed it. "Those little ducks sure are cute. I think we should get some. I'll get the little water trough back and they'll have a pond just for them". I reminded him that they would probably need a duckie house, and fencing. "nothing lives in the back yard, and you've got all that wood...."

There it is. it all comes back to _me_.

Sigh.

but i do want some ducklings...

don't I?

Of course you want some ducklings.. and Guineas too.

Regarding making them your pals.. tough one. They live with you anyway, might as well enjoy them to the fullest. Losses are always hard and traumatic, at least you know you gave them the best possible life. When my girl's come running and want to sit on my lap and talk to me and the dogs, we love it! Should I lose one, well, at least I know they had a good life even though it doesn't make the loss any less painful.
