Ligularia heat hardiness

Sumter, SC

I just bought several ligularia stenocephala (little rocket) plants. Has anyone successfully grown this plant in our heat? I intend to plant it in filtered shade - just hope it performs better than acanthus in my backyard.

I do garden docent for Charleston Historic Society and have seen this plant in many gardens. They are usually planted along the stone walls dividing the properties and are mostly in the shade. I think if you can get it established :-) I have tried 3 times to grow acanthus- this year it is in a pot and doing great.

That's good to know, cornish. I planted mine in mostly shade - about an hour of sun mid afternoon. If necessary, I will move them to all shade. It is a beautiful plant, and I'm surprised I haven't seen any in area yards.

Yesterday found a farfugium (ligularia) japonicum 'crispata' at a wholesale nursury open house for Charleston Horticultural Society. First time I have seen one for sale. The tag says shade but all else I have read says sun or shade- and I am sure it doesn't mean full sun, but it did say these are ' boggy' plants that need a great deal of water. You are right, acanthus and ligulariua ( they changed the name to Farfugium) are plants you just don't see in everyones garden. In fact, I had no idea what ligularia was the first time I saw it. If you are like me you will keep trying till you find its happy spot.

Thanks for the info, cornish. I'll keep a close eye on them and will move them if necessary. Was out this morning and was attacked by yellow flies while killing japanese beetles- sure signs that summer is here to stay.
