I've been growing some tomato plants in self-water buckets. I got quite a few tomatoes off these two plants. The plants are looking kinda raggedy. Can I prune them back to jump start them again? Or are they done? Both are still producing tomatoes. They could probably use some more fertilizer. What are most folks using as fertilizer?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Question about tomatoes
Becky, they can't last much longer. Tomatoes in south Florida have a really hard time with the summer heat. They do best in the fall and early spring, now is the time for peppers and okra, if you like it :). I had some cherry tomatoes do pretty well in semi shade for much of the summer, but the full sized guys just couldn't take it.
What about cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupe? I know peppers do well as I have been growing some of them. Anything else. Most herbs?
I had no luck with melons and cukes, but that was becuase of bugs, not temps, so you might have good luck if you can control the insect population. I never could, but i tend to stay organic-ish. My across-the-street neighbor grew zucchini and bitter melons (chinese fruit/vegetable) successfully, so maybe you could. I'm too lazy to spray all the time. I was in Loxahatchee, so not far from you.
Becky,
Cricketsgarden is a market farmer, growing in South Padre Island, Texas, Zone 10a. Check in with her, and compare your growing climates for compatibility.
If you could latch onto her as your tutor, you'll have more veggies than you know what to do with!
Linda
No, that's Calalily. Cricketsgarden is in AL or MS I believe.
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and advice. I'll check out some of the threads of Calalily and others to see what they are growing now in the south ... particularly Florida. I have a couple of Eggplants that are now huge and making fruit/veggies. I am also growing a pepino fruit bush along with a grape vine. But not sure what else. I do have several different cultivars of cucumbers sprouting now and also a cantaloupe sprout. I am new to edible gardening, so I appreciate all the advice! :-)
