Black Snakes

Rock Hill, SC

We seem to have an abundance of black snakes this year. Has anyone else noticed it? I'm sure they have always been around, but in my 7 years in this house, this is the first time I've SEEN them. We have a 5ft long one skirting between my neighbors and my house that I tried to get my daughters to catch and put in our detached garage to help with the voles, but they wouldn't have any part of it. Geesh, kids today :)

YES. But not sure if I keep seeing the same one. He /she hangs out right next to my walkway and seems to be coming and going from under the porch. So yes more visible but not sure more of them

DH saw a 5 footer slither out of one bush, cross the drive, and climb a 30 foot evergreen with branches all the way to the ground. Perfect vantage point to watch the field across the street and the caged rabbits next door. I feel sure it is still there, as the dogs always go sniff around the tree. Hope it stays hidden.

So far this year, on this one acre west of Columbia, I have seen one garden snake....juvenile maybe..and yesterday, a Mole King Snake. That one, ran off and slithered under the house. Last year, Oct, I found a Black Racer inside the main house. He was ornery, and didn't want to get caught..so I locked him in a base board cupboard till fiance got home from work.

I would have had a FOR SALE sign on my house under those circumstances. LOL

I ran over two coming home. One was a juvenile Eastern King Snake, according to Google. The other was just plain ol' black. Yeah, I know I should feel bad, but I don't. Sorry.

A dme guy was at the house yesterday and said he is seeing more snakes than ever this year.

My husband saw one crawl under a car on our street when he was running tonight. Can they get up into cars??? If I ever see one while I'm driving, go ahead and call 911 for me!

I had one of these pop out on me, http://www.uga.edu/srelherp/snakes/faraba.htm. I had to look him up as he hid under a bush, supposed to be rare to see so I just scooted him off towards the water. Neighbor was freaking out saying it was a cotton mouth but it had a thick body with a small head it wasn't poisious. In my experience if you get close to a cotton mouth they tend to go on the attack, I know the snake lovers say they are just doing their thing but their thing is to bite me if they get close enough to me. Found a big yellow rat snake last year and I left him alone as well, I'm sure I won't see rats from the size of that guy. LOL.

We've seen a couple so far, but then we usually always do. Darn things ate my blue bird eggs this year. I'm going to put a baffle on eventually.

Oh, the one in the house was harmless...really!! It was just funny, with his "all bad" attitude. Now, if he was a poisonous snake, I might would have had to kill him.
No, we aren't going to sell the house. It's a nice place, in the country...and it's paid for. No mortgage. :D

hoogie,
I spotted some pale blue 'fluff' behind the passenger seat in my Mazda Pickup. After looking around I saw that the blue roll of car (Paper) towels I keep had a hole in it.... mice had shredded it for nesting. (by the way this had happened once before). Tucked behind the small rear jump seat (which is never in the down position) was the nest. I live in the country - surrounded by wooded area. I never leave the truck windows down or even cracked. The doors are always locked up tight --just out of habit (lived in NYC) I don't open doors and then run into the house to get a forgotten item... point being..I am always in attendence if a door is open. In my opinion where there are mice.....there are snakes..... and so whenever I drive the truck.... I do so with my heart in my mouth. I don't know how the mama mouse got in but I feel sure a snake would have no trouble following her. It's bad enough to have the snakes up in the trees above my head.... but if one were in the truck with me............... no... I don't think my heart would stand it.

Agh, Rosie!!! I'm with you! I am always afraid to drive my husband's truck because he always keeps his windows cracked and I never know what I am going to find!!! He found a mouse nest in the engine compartment, but so far not the driving compartment, at least he hasn't told me! And you are so right - where the mice are, the snakes aren't far away!

Had one crawl into the wheel of my car one time. We were packing to go on vacation. I suppose we could have driven off but I kind of like snakes and the thought of the mess, well.... We just kind of pestered him until he decided to move on.
We have video of 2 black snakes, one was very very large (7 ft.), ahem, uh, having a go at it. National Geographic at it's best right in my front yard, it was way cool.

Did they light up a cigarette afterwards?

yyyyyyiiiiiipppppeeeeeessssss I do like snakes
I have adopted a huge long black snake that comes thru my yard every day or so but I see him before he sees me.
I hope he survives as he eats rats.
Other snakes are on my hit list.
