I am brand new to passifloras, and want one to grow indoors only. I live in S. California, and it would be in a west window. I need an easy one, since this will be my first. I've heard Lady Margaret is easy, and I like the looks of it. I also love Blue Bouquet and Indigo Dream. I want something that will bloom for me--not a stubborn bloomer. Can anyone help me with suggestions? Don't be afraid to make other suggestions other than what I listed! Thank you!
Lady Margaret, Blue Bouquet or Indigo Dream?
Growing any passie indoors might be a challenge, first because of the lower light level, but also because the vines can get quite large and unruly. They are tendril climbers and need a trellis to grow on, and they seem to enjoy outgrowing whatever trellis you provide. Lady Margaret is a very vigorous vine. It will go through periods where it doesn't bloom, but it blooms profusely once it gets going (outdoor plants anyway). Indigo Dream has a reputation as a stubborn bloomer. I have no experience with Blue Bouquet.
Good luck!
I'll try a Lady Margaret then. Thank you LA!
Blue Boutique is a strong bloomer outside on a trellis. Lots of flowers.... a real favorite. Maybe citrina or sanguinolenta could bloom indoors. Smaller vines.
Thanks for the suggestions Flicker. I will check out both of those.
To get a passiflora to work indoors the light will have to be very bright. More light = more flowers.
Flicker, I'm in the S. California mojave desert--more than 350 days a year of sun. So I have plenty of light! It would be in a west window which gets bright light all day and afternoon sun for about 5 hours this time of year, clear until fall.
As long as you can supply water and soil, sounds like a plan! I have seen gorgeous pictures of huge blooming passiflora in German and Dutch greenhouses. With good trellises and/or pruning, it is a go.
I'm really looking forward to it, and will post pics when I get my plant or plants!
Seaecho,
There are many smaller Passi's, such as "Jennifer Grace", Anastasia, Miersii, Eichleriana which are smaller growing vines and would make excellent candidates for growing indoors. Just something you might want to investigate...
http://gkexoticplants.com is a good place to start, and they are more than happy to answer questions you might have.
Now I have more to look for! Thanks! It was also suggested I look at murucuja and colinvauxii on another forum. I ordered a citrina yesterday from Zone 9 Tropicals, along with an Aristolochia fimbriata. Can't wait to get them. I am now hot for a P. 'Manta,' but so far haven't been able to locate one. Everyone seems to be out of stock. I have emailed a few sellers to see if they happen to have a rooted cutting or something stashed away that I can purchase.
Citrina is a really good bloomer in bright light in a large pot.. Sanguinolenta is even better potted. Nephrodies puts on many nice sized flowers and smells like cotton candy--at dawn! But that was in the ground in full sun. I had problems getting murucuja to bloom. I grew coriacea on my porch in part shade and it bloomed well. Manta is a parent of coriacea. These flowers are the size of a nickel. I have biflora in a pot in bright shade-it works well. Trifasciata makes a lovely vine because of it's attractive leaves- the white flower is ok, too.
Seaecho, check Ebay also...there are some very good finds/sellers there.....just check out the feedback and be sure to ask questions if you have them before you purchase
I look at ebay on a regular basis. Thanks all!
