A couple new plants

Arlington, TX

I bought some gerber daisy on impulse today and now I wonder how well they do here and what conditions they like. Would they take full sun with water? Do they die in the intense heat or summer or keep blooming? Normally I do not buy annuals unless I know something about them but the red color was irresistable!

Heliopsis helianthodes is the other plant. I must have misread about it because I thought it was rather tall and slender not bushy. Does anyone grow these and how big do they really get. Also are they at all drought tolerant. I know I can look this one up but there is conflicting information and I tend to trust someone who grows it in similar conditions to mine more.

I have never had any success growing gerbers in full sun or during the summer. They really don't like the heat.

Thats what I was afraid of thanks.

I am in Houston of course but my Gerbera daisies do great. They are on the west side and get about 3 hours of direct sun what with all the trees in my yard. They also come back every year. I have had the same plants growing there for at least 5 years.

I also see that I have a nice little piece of poison ivy growing in that bed. It does real well here too! :o0

So they must like the humidity because you certainly aren't cooler than we are! I only bought a couple and will try them in part shade. The red ones are just so vibrant.

I bought a half a doz gerberas on sale for quarter each last fall at Lowes. I figured I didnt have much to lose if they didnt make it over the winter.. After the real cold weather we had this winter I didnt expect much cause they are not considered a perenial in my area but to my surprise Ive had 5 of them come back and are doing well.. I have them planted where they get some shade and some sun and some in full sun.. the ones in full sun have already bloomed in a beautiful red.. Im still waiting to see what other colors I have

Now I am confused. Where should I put them?

I have a Gerber on the north side of the house and gets about 3-4 hours of sun. This spring we got 3 blooms.

I will say that some folks that live down the street have grown gerbers for a couple of years. They grow them on the east side of the house where they get dappled sun from the big trees in their yard.

I think youll do okay if you plant them where you can get part sun part shade.. lets face it not much can take FULL Texas sun no matter what the tags say...lol.... I still have to see if mine make it over the summer since I just planted them last fall.. even my full sun area get a few hrs of shade..
good luck!

Just bought two mixed potted plantings of these at wal-Mart for 50 cents each.... The lady was piling them up in a cart and SMASHING them badly! I bout had a heart attack...
Anyway, she could not give them away for some odd reason, they were just going to be put in the trash. However, I was able to buy them for 50 cents apiece. They were in pretty sad shape. I watered them and cut off the smashed, yellow and brown dead leaves. This was about 2 weeks ago. They are now VERY full and green with much new growth. They are even flowering today, beautiful light pink, coral colored blooms.
Mine are still in pots, they are on the south side of my house, but sort of under the covered area to my back door. They get morning sun and filtered light sun and shade after 1 pm.
I have read that they don't like too much water because they can get crown rot easily. (This may only apply to containers... not sure.) So I just keep mine lightly moist. So far so good. Best of luck with yours :)
