I would love to find Kumquat Fortunella crassifolia 'Meiwa'

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I would love to find a rooted Fortunella crassifolia 'Meiwa' Kumquat. LMK if you have one you would like to trade or receive postage. Tasted my first one this year and fell in love.

Thanks for looking,
Sandy

They are generally only propagated by grafts so a rooted cutting will be very hard to fine. However, you can find them everywhere in Houston at the nurseries. Expect to pay between 22-35 dollars. You will probably even get fruit this year.

Is that the same for all Kumquats as far as being grafted? If I got some seeds would they grow or would they need grafted? I don't know anything about them except once the seeds dry out they say they are no good.

Guess if I really want one I better save my pennies.

Thanks,
Sandy

They will grow from seeds. I will take 3 or more years to get the first fruit and the fruit will not be the same as the parent tree more than likely.

OK thanks.

I got a Meiwa Kumquat from a nursery in northern Houston (don't remember the name, just that it was advertised as an "organic" nursery) and it gave me fruit the first year in the ground. You're right, they are delicious.

I will be on the look out for one. I really enjoyed to ones a friend brought me to eat. I can find them online but they can not ship to Texas. :o(

I have a few growing in the yard and one in a pot. They are extremely cold hardy as well. Meiwa can usually take 14-15F.

They are pretty big. Lowes is carrying them right now around 5 feet tall for 25 bucks.
Pretty good deal.

I will head to Lowe's this week. I was at a Lowe's coming back from Jacksonville and their citrus trees were 14.97. Of course this was before I decided to get one.

Call around first. Find out which ones have them and then find out if they are going to have a 1/2 off sale this weekend.

Boom!!! 12.50 Kumquat.
