Are there some bulbs that dont play well with others??

Castlewood, SD

Just curious here.. are there some things that shouldnt be planted side by side? I cant remember if it was tulips or daffs that shouldnt be planted with some things, because of a chemical the bulb lets off?? Are there any others?
thanks in advance for any responses.

Mmmm....I can't think of any bulbs that are 'allergic' to each other. Other than 'color-wise'! You would want to be sensitive to hues and tints and the old color wheel we learned about in grade school when planning your bulb garden!

Another caveat I can think of is that some bulbs will take more shade and more summer watering So some bulbs will work better interplanted with perennials, etc. And for a really nice garden one would want an understanding of growth and bloom timing to make successful pairings.

You mentioned 'giving off chemicals', and there is some chemical in Daffodils that will spoil water in the vase for other blooms in the bouquet. And likewise daff chemistry is unappealing to animals so daffs are often survivors of critter appetites.

Another common bulb that causes some harm is the Hyacinth bulb. Many people have skin reactions or sneeze when around the bulbs and the blooms. And again, members of the hyacinth family are often avoided by animals.

I will be interested to hear if others know of bulbs that react unfavorably to each other...any thoughts?
