larkspur question

Chalfont, PA(Zone 6b)

I have a ton of larkspur that self seeded in one of my beds. There is so much of it that I want to move some over to another bed, but I've hear that larkspur does not like to be transplanted. Have any of you had any luck transplanting larkspur? (Mine are already about 3-4' high, and some have buds on them).
Thanks!

I have only tried it once and it was not too successful. What I do now is when the larkspur seeds are ripe, I cut the stalk and shake the seed pods over the places where I want the larkspur to grow next year.

But, I was probably not too careful with my transplants, so you may have better luck than I.

Well, I did go ahead and transplant some that I was ripping out anyway (they were smothering a hydrangea and a rose). I transplanted them very quickly to a raised bed that has loose soil in it. We'll see how they do. I figured it was at least worth a try since they were just going to go in my compost pile anyway. I'll let you know ho w they do :)

Pgt..with your green thumb..they'll probably be fine. If not, from what I hear others write about, they probably have dropped some seed already and you'll still have more. You can always purchase starter plants or plant some new ones. Do they do usually direct sow yours or grow inside under lights?

Pippi, I originally grew them from winter sown seeds (milk jugs, transplanted them when they were still itty bitty). I've just let them self sow since then. They have gotten just a bit weedy (I don't mind b/c they are easy to pull up), so I thought I'd move some of the weedy ones to my cutting garden. If they don't survive, I'll collect some seeds from the other area, and sprinkle them in my cutting garden - they make nice cut flower :)

Or in late august,i was worried that the ones that had popped up in the fall would not make it to spring,OH they did 100s of them Sweet.....I soo love them. I also wintersowed a bunch, they are all waiting to be planted..

This has been my first year of planting larkspurs..what is a good flowering plant to plant in front of it, that wil help hold the fragile larkspur stems upright, yet not take away from the beauty of the larkspur. I was just on somebody's blog and she had some red poppies planted in front and her larkspurs were mixed colors. I wonder if those were annual poppies that bloom all summer? I will have to find that person's blog again. Victoria's garden?
