3 Pair of HS

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

So far, we have caught three pair of house sparrows. We took the BB nest box down after we caught the second pair of HOSp and kept it down for about two weeks. We put the BB nest box back up one evening and there was a male HS on it in less than 24 hours. We took the nest box back down hoping he would move on. Instead, he tried to take over the other BB nest the bluebirds raised their last clutch in. The BB were fighting him off with all they had, but in the end, the HS was sitting on top of the BB box. So, we put the dummy BB box back up. Within one day, we had trapped both a male and a female HS again. So, that makes 3 pair of House Sparrows we have trapped this spring. Currently, the dummy BB box is not up.

Looks like its working, Keep us posted.

No more House Sparrows. There was one male singing this week calling for a mate, but left. I hope he doesn't return. The dummy BB box is closed. I don't know why my husb. closed it. I think to discourage the House Sparrows.
My BB are busy, busy feeding their second clutch. I ordered another 5,000 mealworms this week. I hope they make it in this heat.
Brown Thrush is busy too. "Click" "Click" she says.
We have a huge crow that is roosting way to the back of our forest. The birds chase him out of the back yard.
Our Purple Martins are busy chattering and cheering each other. They too, are busy feeding their young. We have several gourds and apartments with babies. We haven't been able to get an exact count. We set out in our lawn chairs and watch them. They are quite entertaining.
The Goldfinch have eaten all the poppy seeds.
Our Carolina Wrens moved out of our garage. We were glad about that. Now, we can close the window!

Sounds wonderful, Birder. I have 1 pair of HS, which haven't been around lately. Must be the Grackles. They have taken over everything lately. I must say that the Blue Jay has taken a stand.

For me, it's the mocker that runs nuisance birds off.
My husband & I were sitting outside in the shade eating strawberries and sipping iced tea in the shade in our lawn chairs this evening watching the purple martins again this evening. One has to slow down and enjoy nature once in awhile!

Strawberries and iced tea while watching the Purple Martins... How much better can it get?

Glad to hear you are making progress in your battle with the HOSP.

It appears keeping the door closed on the "used to be" bluebird box discourages the HS. There was another on it today, but when he saw the door was closed, he moved on. I don't like keeping the door closed, but the HS have been tenacious this year. They will probably be around my feeders this winter. Grrrr.
PM are fledging. Again, fun to watch.
Second clutch of BB have fledged. It's time to clean out their nestbox. Usually, in August, the BB disappear. Then, in October they show back up at the feeders.
