What type of bird is this?

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Some type of woodpecker, I think. It's living in a hole in my Linden tree and seems quite unafraid of me but got VERY agitated when a squirrel was climbing around the tree this morning.

This is in Ottawa, Canada.

When the squirrel was in the tree, it didn't move, but the wings were opened much like this.

Cool! I'll be watching it. Thank you for the ID.

Very amusing little birds to watch and enjoy!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I enjoy its 'mono-syllable' calls, and love watching the bird climbing down trees head-first.

There are, of course, TWO of them and they've been busy building a next or at least dragging in padding material for the hole. Reminds me I should go take a look.

oooo....maybe you will have babies soon!

Sad news - I haven't seen them at all for about 4 days. don't know what happened. Maybe the squirrels made a pest of themselves and they packed up and moved or maybe a cat got to them - the hole in my tree isn't very high up or maybe they got injured. I saw one of them fly into my parked car back on May 17 and then bounce off and fly up into another tree. It didn't seem injured, but you never know and if they regularly fly into objects, maybe one was severely injured another time.

That is too bad....they may have just found a better location.
