Cure for Chlorosis of Leaves

Kenner, LA

Hi,

One of my Cajun Hibiscus plants recently started to show Chlorosis symptoms. I treated it with Epsom Salt solution. The problem seemed to reduce a little but it is not gone. The plant is about an year old and is potted in Miracle Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix. I did fertilize it with Carl Pool's Hibiscus Fertilizer (has iron and other micro nutrients along with the majors) about 2 weeks ago when I first started seeing the problem.

Did anyone face such problems, and what did you do to take care of it?

Thank you for your suggestions.

Hope you didn't over ferterlize, but I am no expert.

My Cajun Hibiscus, Gumbo File, which I bought a month ago is showing yellowing leaves. I have feed it with Epsom Salt water only a couple of times. The buds have not dropped yet. Hope to see it bloom for the first time.

For the chlorosis, do you know what your soil pH is? If the pH is too high the plant can't absorb iron so even if you gave it fertilizer with iron it won't be able to take it up.

Peg--yellowing leaves isn't necessarily chlorosis--with chlorosis the leaves will be yellowish, but the veins will still be green. If your leaves are just plaing yellow it's more likely caused by improper watering (too much, too little, or being inconsistent and letting them dry out followed by soaking them) Changes in weather conditions can also cause it sometimes and in that case it's nothing to worry about, the plant will be fine in the long run.

Thank you for the replies. I used a good quality potting mix, so I think the pH should be in the neutral range. Maybe I should test it.

Out of the last three Cajun Hibiscus I purchased, two have died. I think the root stock they are using is not hardy. I saw in them the local stores (Jefferson Feed and Plant Gallery) and they looked in bad shape. I just love their colors and I keep on buying them. I have tried some foliar feeding, and let me see how they work.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the info. ecrane. I'll have to be a little more careful in watering.
