Does anyone know how to root jatropha? I have one that is a bush type and I need to shorted the branches it is getting too floppy. I hate to toss the cut offs.

Is this a spicy jatropha? I had a piece break off mine and I put it in water and 2 weeks later it is not wilted. My hopes is to see roots soon. Is yours a red one or a pink one? I have a red one and would love to find a pink one. If mine has roots when I get home I will let you know. I am at Smockettes for a few days and will be home tues afternoon.

I tried cuttings of my red spicy jatropha and had no success in my green house. I tried semi-woody cuttings, but didn't have any luck. Maybe I didn't wait long enough. I tried mine in a seed/cutting starting mix and kept it very moist, but all of the leaves fell off and I never saw a root. I am trying some from seed right now.

Try some different things and see how you do. Some in water, some in sand, some in potting mix. If you have any luck, let us know.

Mine is red and from Monrovia. It is a compact Jatropha, Jartropha intergerrima. I would love a pink one. I guess I sould just try and take a few cuttings. I have goodlick rooting oleander that way.
Thanks for the help. I will keep everyone posted.

I just got home and the leaves are gone. I am going to leave it in water and see what happens. I hope mine will make seeds so I can grow some more. Oh and from what I read the one we have are one in the same. LMK how it works out. You also may try air-layering.

I have had great success with seeds from jatropha multifida and have given away 5 or 6 plants to friends. Unfortunately, my mature plant died over the winter, but I have 2 12" tall seedlings to replace it. One is in the ground, the other is in a pot. I just put 3 more seeds in the greenhouse to see if I can get more stock out there. Funny you mentioned the pink variety. I had never seen one until this weekend. I was walking through a nursery and thought....that looks like a pink jatropha....and it was! I also have
a Jatropha podagrica that has several seed pods on it, but they aren't ready to harvest yet. I have never had a mature seed from that variety, but hopefully I will get some soon.

Good luck with the cuttings and layering. I am always interested in hearing what works and what doesn't.

I was looking thru the plant files...Look at this http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/191610/. It is Variegated. I am surprised that I don't care much for it. But I really want a pink one. Did you buy the pink one? Was it very expensive? Was it as pretty as the red variety? Lots of questions.

The pink I saw was not variegated and was the same price as the red. It was a fine looking specimen with nicely colored blooms. All of the plants were about 2 ft tall, but I didn't buy any. I opted for mist flowers instead - they were on sale for 1/2 off! The nursery is in Ingleside and is called Johnsons. They had quite a few of the pink jatropha, and probably still have some if you wanted to make a drive. I don't care for the variegated either!

Happy hunting.

Russell. Sorry I wish I could but its to far for me to drive even for a pink Jack.

Yeah at the price of gas I think I will pass too.

Haha....maybe we will be able to get one at the south texas RU! I wish nurseries would let us take a snip of plants for a reduced rate...who knows what I would have in my garden if that was the case.

Anything is possible. I was at lowe's today and got a great deal on a ponytail palm. There was 3 in a pot for 9.98. I also got a variegated ginger for 1 dollar. It was almost bare rooted and the leaves are too far gone to save but the roots or rhizome looks great. Also got a coral princess cape fushia for 1 dollar. Have to look it up. Really pretty. Hope it lives here.

I must admit that Lowes has some good deals on their half dead plants. All they need is a little TLC.
One grower told me to let the Jack cutting fry out or callus a few days and then into soil. It doesn't sound like water rooting is going to work.
I would love to get a pink. Perhaps Almost Eden might have on for me.

I got my pink jack. It is small but very pretty, not too pale. I got it from Almost Eden. Expensive is relative, I didn't think it was and they had it. I got a bunch of stuff from them that I have wanted and have never seen here at all. My red jack that is a bush is in a pot because of our winter here in Arizona. I had really grown a lot so I know by next year if I keep it alive it will be a very good size. My Jack tree (red) that I got is just beautiful. That was not cheap but today we were at that nursery and they just had runts for the same price as I paid. I at least have a very nice looking red tree. The hummers love it. I had to stop feeding them because I was getting tons of bees.
I bought a miniature fuchsia at Lowe's for a few dollars. They can't take the heat here. It's under a huge pine tree so it is a little cooler and it is now full of buds. Perhaps it will be able to make it with our heat after all. They had several large hanging baskets for dirt cheap but I thought they would die and I don't want many more plants that I have to bring inside for the winter.
