Can anyone ID this seedling? 4 showed up in my winter sowing of R. hirta and I thougth they looked like some sort of coreopsis but now I don't. I planted a couple out in my beds just to see.
friend or foe?
It is a Surprise! LOL!
Well the stringy thing is getting large and they have what appear to be tiny buds forming. I will post a pic if and when it flowers. I was hoping someone had seen it before.
It looks a bit like cosmos
Did someone give you the 'hirta' seed? If so maybe they would be able to id it.
I don't think Cosmos have branches with buds, though. At least mine don't.
I bought the seed so no one to ask. I grow cosmos and though I can see how it looks like that, trust me its not a cosmos. I am still thinking it will have yellow flowers. Might be something lovely, who knows.
I think it is Coreopsis tinctoria http://wildflower.org/gallery/result.php?id_image=2019
That is a possibility but the leaves don't look exactly right. I will have to wait for it to flower.
I think Josephine is correct. I've grown those in the past and their foliage is very much like that of the cosmos.
I'm leaning towards weed with the growth rate and scraggly branches.
I do have some weeds that look exactly like that. I don't know what they are, though.
At this point in time anything is possible. I thought their overall habit looked like a coreopsis and I still think that is the best possibility. If its a weed (and really what is a weed afterall) its a new one to my yard so of course I cant wait for it to flower and spread seed all over!
I have something in one of my flower beds that I'm waiting to see what it becomes. It's probably some kind of grass! LOL
Stephanie, the one you brought to me is blooming now. I am going to post it on our RU plant thread and see if anyone knows what it is now.
