watermelon

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

OK, my first try at watermelon. I have two plants in this little area with bush beans. My plan was to let the vines grow over the tile, getting the watermelons out of the way so as not to crowd the beans. Now I've noticed some little tendril thingys growing out of the vine. Do they root? That would ruin my plan, since the soil outside the cinder blocks is hard and probably wouldn't grow anything. You know, there's just nothing like jumping into things without reading up on them--just seemed like such a neat plan.

They are just to grab ahold of things. They latch on to anything. The real important thing about Watermelon is a very well drained soil.

It's been a long time since we have grown watermelons, but I don't think the tendrils try to root. I believe the tendrils are for twining and growing upwards. Maybe not such a good idea for a watermelon.

Yeah, can't you just see watermelons "hanging" on a vine?

Thanks to you both for your input. We'll see if my idea works..

I posted this on another thread yesterday. My first baby Watermelon of the year. My Cantelope and Ha Ogen melons are doing even better.

The tendrils won't root, but they will start climbing all over the beans if you don't watch it. Last year, we planted 3 watermelon plants and had miles of vines in our garden! LOL

Lousy internet connex where I am, I plant melons behind a mound they climb over on their way to the sun, these are under peppers, don't think my dau knows how much water Melons require, tho. Then there is a pit behind them I fill with water every 3/4 days, the tendrils can choke other plants to death, even themselves, you can feel free to snip them off each other if you must. These have been thinned once, I may take a few more out

This year, we have 3 volunteer watermelon plants near our compost pile.

Wow, I just searched "wtermelons" and never imagined how much water they take. Do you just get one melon per vine? Seems like that's what someone wrote. Maybe I misread it.

No, you can get multiple melons per vine. You have to be concerned with consistent watering, not daily watering, but consistent watering or they will burst just before ripening. Last summer, we had several melons just about ready for picking, then got 3 days of rain. Needless to say, most of those melons didn't make it.
