Hi there. I am not a huge bird watcher but every year at the nursery I work at we get 12-15 hummingbird nests (that we find). It is such a joy for us and the customers as the birds are extremly tame and friendly and often make the nests at eye level.
This morning we came in and every nest, including a wren nest, was empty and/or destroyed.
We have seen a big black crow hanging around. Do you think he could be the culprit? Some of the nests were up way to high for anything else to reach. Someone noticed a bunch of Robins hanging around too.
We are just heartbroken.
Thanks.
Cannibal Crow?
Yes, he could be the culprit. Crows are extremely intelligent. I took a trip yesterday and noticed that every underpass I went through swallows were flying all about. I also noticed crows at every one. I suspect they were eating the swallow babies and eggs.
I do not know much about Crows' behavior. But I've seen Fish Crows that are quite capable of capturing fish by the water.
