My clematis has bloomed beautifully, but now the leaves are browning from the tip up. This happens every year. What do I do?
What's wrong, please
Sybraum...It's not unusual to see browning leaves especially in Texas if you are having a heat wave and even worse in the late Summer...Check and make sure you don't see a broken vine...that also can be the culprit..I am assuming that is Clematis "H.F.Young"? a Pruning group 2...do remember that clematis 'love' to have their roots stay moist ..not soggy but moist...stick your finger in the soil around your clem and if dry water...Mine get watered every other day from my sprinkler system...Hope this helps...Jeanne
ps..your's is gorgeous..remember after it finishes blooming to fertilizer with some tomato fertilizer and water in well..you'll see another flush in late Summer/Early Fall
Thanks, JeanneTx. I'll check out the soil.
Also, I heard recently that leaves browning from the tip inward means overwatering. Anything to that?
Nope tip inward means the plant needs water...it loses leaves in order for the roots to survive..it's a survival mechanism..you are so welcomed hon...Jeanne
I just can't say, Marie. My clem is right next to a stand of elephant ears that get watered a lot, so maybe it is staying too wet. I'm going to try to monitor it better.
That would be it if the other Clem next to it had done the same. I even checked the root to see if something was digging under it, But nothing. So I am at a loss.
Beats me. I'm going to ask on the Texas Gardening forum, since I'm in north Texas. Best of luck with yours. s
Transplant shock?
Nope this is its 3rd year. I did notice that it perked up and is growing from another area. It was just strange.
It does give us all hope when things don't seem to be growing correctly.
