I'm a newbie and I haven't used sphagnum moss. A friend of mine bought a dried block, needed just a little for a staghorn fern -- tossed the whold block in water then used her little bit (small fern). She now has a rather soggy mass of sphagnum left. Can she dry it and reuse? Bag it moist? Toss it? What should she do with it?
I posted this on the orchids forum, and no replies. I know my friend will ask me about this the next time that she sees me. I don't tend to use this stuff, so I'm stumped!

Dumb question about sphagnum moss, I'm sure...
This site will answer all your questions about Sphagnum moss, but to answer your original question - yes, it can be re-wet and used when needed.

Hello,
is it sphagnum moss or sphagnum peat moss? If it is sold as a bale, very dark in color and crumbly, then it is the second. It is mainly used as soil conditioner, or adding acidity to potting soil. If it consists of long strands, light colored to greyish, it is sphagnum moss. This is the one that is sometimes used for growing orchids.
You used only the amount you need, rejuvenate it with water. You should dry the left-over and use it later.
