Dog unine

Powell, WY(Zone 4b)

I have a very tricky problem, I have just started cleaning house for a very elderly and not at all well lady. She has many throw rugs around her house that are used to cover up dog urine spots. I know the only real solution to the problem is to remove the carpet and pad and sub floor, but she is going into the hospital for a few days and I was wondering if there is something I can do without insulting her to aleviate the smell??? I know white vinegar might help but I don't want her to come home to a pickel factory! The dogs are her only family.
