Carolina Wrens

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

My Carolina Wrens built a nest in my Christmas Cactus I have hanging on my deck. We have had over 20" of rain in the past about 10 or 12 days. Today, I notice two of the baby wrens are laying on the deck floor under neath the Christmas Cactus. We also have House Wrens nesting in the back yard about 30' from the deck. Now, do you think the HW killed the baby Carolina Wrens, or do you think the rains drowned the babies and the Carolina Wrens took them out of the nest. They are still feeding in the nest. I have not looked yet to see how many are left in the nest, but they usually have a clutch of three.

We have had a pair of Indigo Buntings visiting our deck quite frequently. They have been eating the sunflower seeds. They don't usually eat sunflower seeds and they usually don't come to the feeders very often. I think it's because there has been so much rain they have been unable to get wild seeds themselves.

We also have lots of Red Headed Grossbeaks feeding at the feeders. They are quite pretty and fun to watch--big eaters. They only stop by in the spring and fall on their way north, but we sure enjoy having them as visitors.

We also have some White Crowned Sparrows staying for the summer. The past few years, they have come in the winter, but left in the summer. So, we are happy to have them as new residents.
We "think" we've heard the White Throated Sparrow's song also, but have not been able to identify him on our deck floor hopping around for seeds.

The brown thrush came quite early this spring, and they have visited our feeders quite frequently as well.

You have some very nice birds around your yard birder!
No way to tell how the Carolina Wrens perished unless witnessed.

Thanks pelle.
The more I think about the baby wrens, the more I think it was the rains. If another bird such as HS or the H Wren had done the dastardly deed, there would have been some blood on the babies.
We certainly enjoy watching our backyard birds.
One of the robins has made her nest in the roof that covers part of our deck. She first built the nest in the right hand side of the deck and then, she took it apart and put it on the left hand side. Interesting. They have just hatched and she is quite territorial right now. The other birds that come to feed at the feeders are getting run off.
This A.M. while enjoying our breakfast, we saw four indigo buntings in our Redbud tree that's in our backyard. So fun.
This is a very fun time of year for backyard birders to watch the shenanigans that go in the the bird world!
