Pow plant

Cedarhome, WA(Zone 8b)

I need some help coming up with a really nice plant to go in the pocket at the upper right. This is right as you go down the steps to the patio. Opposite and a bit lower will be a Japanese maple, I'm thinking a bright green twisty variety. The maple will have good winter interest. I'd like something on this side that will likewise be beautiful in summer and winter. Low is better than tall. I don't want to overpower the boulder, which has some really interesting faces. Ideas???

Here's the opposite side of the steps. The maple will go in the first pocket.

How about a Nandina? You could get one that grows to about the right height for you needs. They do not get very wide (will not grow to block the steps) and have an airy, bamboo like sort of feel.

Yes, those are nice and colorful too.

Spirea is a nice plant for full sun, though not too exciting in winter. There are some really pretty ones out there. Same with Berberis . . .

Good ideas, thanks. I'll see what strikes me at the nursery.

Pieris is good. Fragrant too. How about a weeping pussy willow?

Or those weeping tri-colored trees. Pink, green and white.

Well, I don't know about POW plants, but I can tell you, I have had a lot of MIA plants in my gardening years.

LOL.

Ha Ha Ha -- good one Kyla. I went with a nandina - moon bay - for the top of the stairs. Looking down at it, I'm finding I've put in quite a few plants/shrubs on the lime green end of the spectrum. Guess I should get some small conifers to tone things down a bit.

Lamb's Ear fills in a lot of space quickly if you want the blue-greens. And it's big enough to stand up to your large rocks.
