My 89 year old daddy is gardening on my land here. He decided to put a veggie garden next to my woods..Here are some pics..I been trying to get a pic of him out there..he keeps telling me..no..not yet..The garden gets morning sun and shade from the woods..so far he is doing good..He has tomatoes, squash, and okra..
Dad's garden
Looks wonderful. I just read that white ties or bags hanging from fences (because of the deer's bad eyesite) scares them. They think that the white is the white of the deers tail signifing danger. I plan on doing this also. Now, what are the cups at the base of each of the plants? {89 years old, that is wonderful}.
Marie
Bless his heart - 89 and still gardening. An inspiration. The garden looks great!
Those cups has the names to the tomatoes..he is making garden stakes next..so he can mark the names to them..well I will wound up doing all the writing..he says...his is chickenscratch too bad to read..mine is readable..lol...I am hoping to get him out there this weekend for a pic..
Good luck, my dad dodged that camera in 12 out of 13 tries, chuckl, felt like I was trying to take a pic of 'Wilson' the faceless nex door neighbor
LOL...I hear ya..He wants his plants to grow abit before he has his pic taken..lol..we planted today..more okra, squash, cukes and broom corn..to keep the garden going..
A very nice garden! Your dad did good!
I need to take a pic of his corn patch with squash n peppers beside it..mmm. a job to do this evening..lol..
Very nice garden, Moodene, Thanks! I sometimes use plastic picnic knives for plant markers, using sharpie pens to write on them.
I use plastic mini-blind slats for labels. Magic Marker may fade, but simple pencil lead doesn't! And it is erasable for next year.
You can get a very fine line with regular mechanical pencils (0.5 mm wide lead), or use the "0.7 mm lead" and get a wider, darker line. I find little differemnce betweeen "HB" and "B" lead, thoguh the "B" is a little softer and darker.
With the 0.5 mm pencils, I can get two lines of text on a mini-blind slat cut in half!
You just have to push them into the soil gradually, with your fingers near the base, if your soil is hard.
Corey
Rick, that's a good idea about pencil. Sue
I was obsessing on paint pens and Xylene and thinking about UV-proof overcoats when I read that suggestion by someone else. Bingo, problem solved!
I bought a dozen cheap 0.7 mm mechanical pencils and fancy "hi-polymer lead" to give away in trades ... but the lead seems to make no difference.
I also cleaned my slats with Comet Cleanser and Bon-Ami, thinking the abrasive would give a better marking surface - not needed.
But avoid washing the slats in a dishwasher! I had some get wrinkled, presumably from the heat.

Will be posting some updated pics..of his garden. No deer yet as come by to have lunch with him yet..LOL...
Plastic containers are our tables n chairs while we rest and have coffee..lol..
Everthing looks just great Moodene, but where's Poppa? ;-)
If it bothers him, don't bug him about it. Least said, soonest compromised.....or something like that. You've got good genes with that fella still gardening at 89. An inspiration for sure.
Looking great -- kudos to your dad!
Mindy
So cool your dad is still wanting to garden, and it appears very successfully, at that!
I love your picnic spot to rest and have coffee with your dad. Go Mooden's dad!
Yup, My dad does get after whatever he wants to do..still drives an hour to come visit me and the gardens..lol..
I think in that picture he looks more like 69! See, gardening will keep us young! I must have started to late... :) Janet
Alot of people who meets him, thinks he is younger than he looks..lol..hope to have same thing when I get up to his age!. His mom passed away at 103 yrs old and was driving a golf cart on their property while tending their alligator farm..
Jeez, you got some stories to tell girl!
103 yrs old and was driving a golf cart on their property while tending their alligator farm..
....that sounds like the makings of a country song. ;-)
lol..my dad has more than I do..on these stories..he tells me about WW2 alot..Landing on the Normandy and Battle of the Bulge..he was in the USA Army 13th Medical Depot..setting up hospitals all over Europe and driving the gasoline truck behind enemy lines..ugh..shivers...
Moodene--that is so special your dad shares those stories with you. I know many vets are reluctant to talk about their time in the service. Your dad sounds like an amazing man.
There are some things he will not discuss with anyone because it is too bad. BUT! he really enjoy telling me stories when he was a child..funny ones..like traveling in a Model T Ford from Sour Lake to Kirbyville whick took them all day! His mother wrapped them in quilts and put their feet in papersacks then wrapped in quilts. His daddy forgot to drain the water out of the radiator that nite and the block of the engine froze up..lol..
Moodene--your dad is an awesome looking 89 year old! I'd have never guessed him to be that age! Thanks for sharing your dad's story (and picture), and tell him he's got some fans out on DG!
Would you believe he has some 40 to 80 yr old women after him??? They told my stepsisters that he is so HOT!!..I have noticed that too while we are shopping in Tractor Supply store...heads were turning...sheeze..
That's too funny. Way to go, Moodene's dad!
Sharp-looking man, and his garden is doing great!
Mindy
