It started with those bags to grow potatoes in, and now at least Gardener's Supply has bags in all shapes and sizes and colors. I DO love them for growing potatoes and am toying with growing other things in them.
My question is this -- what are they made of? Is it the same felt you can buy at a fabric store? If so, I can make them a LOT cheaper than I can buy them, and I can make them as deep and wide as I want.
Also, I've bought dirt to put in them and can't stop the little thoughts about what my grandpa would say if he knew I was BUYING DIRT.
Any thoughts before I start an orchard?
Grow bags
LOL - Practically killed my Dad when we started BUYING WATER, but dirt!?! oh, yeah - that would REALLY do him in!
PS - Hav eno clue regarding your question. Just had to laugh at your funny!
brigidlily, I was not succesfull with those bags to grow potatoes ... maybe it was my fault because I put them too close to the sprinklers and they got all wet and moldy.
Sequee, hasn't what we take for granted changed!!
drthor, sorry you didn't have success! I have them just sitting on dirt and I guess maybe they don't get too soaked. I start the potatoes in dirt and when they sprout I gradually add hay. This is the third year I've used them.
Brigidlily,
I've thought the same about making the potato growbags. I use the Smartpots. I believe it's a felt blend. The key to whatever fabric you use is that water absolutely MUST flow thru easily for good drainage. Also, it should offer a fair amount of "breatheability" so some oxygen can get thru.
Why don't you get a few remnants and make a couple small bags? You could put flowers in to test the fabrics.
Google "Non-Woven Felt suppliers". You probably could find the same exact stuff that Smartpots are made out of in one of the hits. Here's the first link from the search.....
