Gesneriads in hanging baskets

This is an example of a Kohleria growing in a hanging basket. This variety (Kohleria 'Dark Velvet') has a tendency to get rather tall and the stems tend to flop over at some point. Last year I thought, I'd make lemonade out of lemons and put it in a hanging basket. This is actually the original plant from my very first Kohleria cutting from three years ago. Not only was it my first Kohleria, it also was my first Gesneriad. 3 AVs followed and now it's a collection of dozens of species and varieties. The little cutting that would.

I've seen a few and was positively surprised. The only downside is that I sometimes have to water it twice a day in Summer...

Nice idea Olaf. It must be under an overhang outside? What kind of sun exposure does it have?

It's actually indoors in an East facing sun room. It gets a few hours of morning sun and then bright light for the rest of the day. And yes, it's hard to overfeed or overwater an actively growing Kohleria. LOL They are both food and water hogs and if you let them dry out past their comfort zone, they will blast buds.

I probably wouldn't put a tall upright hybrid like 'Mother's Lipstick' in a basket but all the more compact cultivars can look fantastic. They just need a couple of pinchings and you'll have a wonderfully blooming Kohleria at eye level.
