One of the lesser known propagation techniques for Gesneriads with scaly rhizomes (Achimenes, Smithiantha, Kohleria, Eucodonia to name a few) is by rhizome scales. When I bought my Smithiantha cinnabarina rhizomes, there was one piece that did not look like it was going to make it. I broke off the scales and sprinkled them on some damp mix. All but one were too badly damaged and didn't make it. Only this one just started putting out new growth. The new shoots are about the size and shape of seedlings and should be treated as such.

Propagation by rhizome scales
Good job,i love smithianthias
It's actually the first time for me growing them. The babies are happily growing while the other rhizome still hasn't broken dormancy...
I love smithies too:) So easy to grow!
