Hummingbird 1st aid needed.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I found this little Ruby throated hummingbird struggling on pavement outdoor. It tried to get to bush to hide but really appeared distress. I gently brought him inside and gave him some drops nectar. He's very week weak and appears gasping for air...

As he tries to take in some nectar he felt into the sticky nectar in the little bowl, so I found a smaller nectar cup the bottle cap to prevent further nectar bath. But he all sticky...

How long should I try to feed him with a little Q-tip, I can see he uses his tongue to drink in the nectar. But I don't want to over fed him. Your help is needed.

Doubt you can over-feed it, it'll just refuse any more when it's full.

Give it some clean, warmish water to bathe in too.

I would think that you could sit a regular small hummingbird feeder completely in there and let him help himself. especially if it could be a flat type. And Make sure he is warm enough.

Lily, when I was banding hummers, after we were finished measuring them, we would stick their bill right into the sugar water for just a couple seconds, then pull it out and repeat until the bird begins to take to the feeder on its own. I doubt a Q-tip would do much good.

I'd call your local vets to see if they can give you any information on a local bird rescuer or if they have an avian doctor.

Thank you for your responses and help everyone. I took Marna's websites and searched for a local rehab. Unfortunately, by the time they responded to my call, my little bird expired. It was a sad ending to a very beautiful and blessed day that I had.

I'm so sorry to hear this Lily. Just know that you did everything you could to save the baby.

Thanks Duc. I'm pleased that the local rehab returned my call in a speedy manner, even on a holidays! That by itself lets me know that there are others who cares.
