Will Hawthorn pollinate a Mayhaw?

When I bought my tiny little "Big Red" Mayhaw, the website said that they were "self-fertile". But since then I've been told that they are not. The little guy has survived and grown over the last two years, and I'm thinking it will flower next year.

We have quite a few native hawthorns around. Will they pollinate my Mayhaw?

Has anyone ever eaten a Big Red out of hand? are they realistically edible?

I doubt there is any sure way to tell, other than to wait and see. Since Mayhaws are reportedly species of Crataegus native to the Southeast (mostly C. aestivalis), it would likely have to be an interspecies cross.

I dont think you will have a problem. No, realistically they are not edible. Its like eating a dry apple pith. I guess, technically, they are edible, but not realistically. I have a few big reds, however, no variety of mayhaws that i know of are "edible" out of hand. the best jelly though.

Thanks, that is what I figured, mostly for Jelly, only.

I guess, if it doesn't make fruit once it is mature, I can try to graft on a branch of some other type of Mayhaw.
