Clematis on Daylilies???

McLean, VA(Zone 7a)

I have just planted a bed with about 80 hybrid, reblooming daylilies, only daylilies. I was wondering if I could plant a few clematises here and there that would vine over the daylilies. Would that work?

Clematis need something to climb. But yes, daylilys make a great combo with clems.
I plant daylilys at the feet of my clematis to shade the roots in summer and they look great. I'll see if I can find some pics.

I have clematis at the back of daylily beds and spread out among the daylilies, but they are growing on some type of vertical support.

There are some herbacious clematis that do scramble and would look fine with your daylilies. Rooguchi is one which I like very much. Also Durandii would scramble I believe.

Thanks for your replies. The word "scramble" was helpful. It led me to "ramble." The idea is that daylilies are pretty dull when not in bloom. I thought that a scrambling clematis might liven the bed up.

After searching a bit, I came up with the following types as possibles:

Diversifolia Henderson
Helios
Integrifolia Pangborne Pink
Clematis 'Arabella’
Group: Recta
Group: Integrifolia
Group: Heracleifolia
Durandii
Juuli
praecox
Rooguchi

Rooguchi is pretty. IT has dark purple bells on it but you have to get close to it to see the flowers. Durandii would put on a much better show. Remember that these vines are small so you probably want to put many of them in. The only other problem I can think of is when you divide the daylilies you will have to avoid the clematis.

Are you looking for types that grow to a certain length. Brushwood nursery has a section of non vining clems that may be helpful too.
