Companion herb for Kumquat

Hammond, LA

Hi all! I have a kumquat tree that I planted in my yard about 4 years ago. Due to health issues I've not done a lot of gardening in the last two years but now I'm back at it trying to weed, clean up, and plant my garden back to health.

I've been doing a bit of research on a companion herb that will benefit the growth of the kumquat and I've only come up with comfrey and lavender so far. From what I'm reading, comfrey tends to be invasive which I would like to avoid. Lavender does not tend to do very well here due to the high humidity and extreme summer temperatures. I am open to suggestions on these two choices though as someone may have experience growing a specific type of comfrey or lavender in zone 8.

The kumquat is planted close to the edge of the woods but gets full sun about 80% of the day. The soil is acidic with some small amounts of clay mixed in with more fertile, loamy soil. (Gardenias and camellias grow extremely well here!). I plan to transplant my potted Meyer's Lemon tree close to my kumquat as well. That poor Meyer's Lemon has been through Hurricanes Katrina and Gustave and many months of neglect as well and it's still growing strong although it has not produced fruit in at least 3 years. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!!
