Bird Baths and other Waterfeatures in the Garden.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Okay, spring has arrived. Our feathered friends are busy starting family of their own. Let's share our enjoyment of setting up waterfeatures for the birds in the gardens.

We came from this thread where many ideas were shared and enjoyed recently. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1093967/

Remember the shallow dish bird bath that I set up last year? I begun to suspect the motive was for the gardener's enjoyment, rather than the birds' benefit. ;-)

Here is a picture of my latest creation ,this was made from a mold that I made last year from one of the EE birdbaths ,and I made the mold so as to have on for use when there were no EEs available This was made as a class project at a gardening class that I teach at Talihina Public Libraty and as is the case of all our projects it is donated to TPL as an auction item for the new building fund

I have the usual pedestal birdbath, But I recently added a small fountain. All the birds adore it, but especially the little finches. I turned the pump on the lowest setting so it just trickles, and put some rocks in the 3 levels of pools so the little ones have shallow spots. They are in it every day, flapping and fluffing, often 6 or 7 at a time, but I only got the pic of the one:

Very nice job, Grits. Very creative! Marna, I hope I can catch some of the birds come to visit my pond. MP, that's very nice. See the fountain on my header? It's relatively new, but for weeks I've yet seen any par take of the thing. Maybe I need to slow the flow and let the water just strickle down?

Lily, mine was ignored for a couple of days until I turned the pump waaaaaaay down - as close to a drip as I could get it. To the point where you turn it on and it takes several minutes to start trickling. It also got more birds when I moved some of my potted plants right next to it. and did some rocks to make the pools very shallow. Try that, maybe it will work.

Of course, all sorts of creatures like it. This is that very very rare bird known as the Squirrel-arsed Tippler:

ROFL, that does it. That made my evening for me. It's too funny. I just love it. Thank you MP.

Glad I could give you a chuckle, LL! If anyone is interested, the fountain is from Home Depot. I only wish I was skilled and crafty like Grits to make something unique and beautiful.

I too got my fountain from HD as well. At the pond some water friends below;

The big koi above is "Spot" and here are his buddies, some Gold fish and shubunkins, one is very pregnant, I think.

Thanks again grits!

Here's a shot of a solar fountain right after I cleaned it. It only takes a day or two before the birds have soiled enough for another cleaning. However, since I enjoy watching them flit around in it, I don't mind the cleaning part.

Another solar fountain on the other side of the deck.

Very beautiful garden's art and setting Deepwater805. Talking about cleaning. Spring pollens made these bird baths requiring cleaning more often...

There are some gorgeous water features on this thread...wish I could have one of each, especially that pond of Marna's!!

Here is a birdbath I put together using a $1 lamp and a 50 cent glass ashtray...both yard sale bargains. The lamp base is upside down and secured using rebar. It sits up high in that flower bed and the birds really love it.
