i am afraid i need a bit of handholding here. i am offering a cutting of one of them, helpers choice, for the effort.

Help with Registration please
Belle,
I know most of the process even though I have not gone through the process myself. The ICRA (International Cultivar Registration Authority) through http://ibrugs.com/ is the only entity authorized to register new cultivars.
This first link will give you more information on how to proceed.
http://ibrugs.com/CultivarRegistration/CultivarRegistrationInformation.aspx
There are links on this page that may help with naming a cultivar, and includes a list of named cultivars so there won't be any duplication.
Here is the link to the Registration form:
http://ibrugs.com/CultivarRegistration/CultivarRegistrationInformation/CultivarRegistrationForm.aspx
If you read this information carefully, you shouldn't have any problems. General questions I could probably answer, but if you have any specific questions, it would be best to contact the registrar himself by clicking on the link supplied under the heading "Important Information"
You will have to supply 4 photos. If you scroll down to the bottom of the registration form on the lower left side of the form, you'll find instructions on the photos required.
Am I correct in assuming that you have grown these seedling for several years and have had others trial them for you so you can see how they do in other location?
I hope this information has helped. I look forward to seeing those new Brugs.
It can also be done through BGI.

Belle,
If you want to register your Brugs, it can't be done through BGI. They are not authorized to register Brugs. Any Brugs "registered" through them is not recognized by the ICRA.

This is the group who decides where registration takes place.

I knew that answering your questions had its risks, but was hoping that this confusing created by BGI wouldn't spread to Dave's Garden. I guess it has. I dislike politics in gardening. It ruins more gardening enjoyment than anything else. I try to be apolitical in my answers and to provide accurate information. I would be glad to answer any questions you have if you send me D-mail, but I don't intend to post to this thread any longer. I don't want my love of Brugmansias reuined. I'm sorry you got caught in the middle. I'm also sorry that this opportunity to provide others with the information has been sidetracked and will probably be deleted.
i made the crosses, grew the plants, propagated the promising ones and trialed them in several areas of the US with friends for 2 years.
there's 3 that, in my opinion, are keepers.
thanks for pointing me in the right direction. i knew there was some controversy and i want to make sure i do it the right way.
betty, may i contact you privately if i run into any snags?
Yes, you may. D-mail me and I'll send you my e-mail address.
There is a bit of a misconception here: It is perfectly acceptable to send in a new cultivar name for registration with either IBADS(aka iBrugs) or BGI or anyone else who offers the service of publishing new names in a way which establishes them under the international rules.
The key difference between IBADS, as the ICRA for Brugmansia, and BGI is that IBADS is obliged to enter into its register any cultivar name established by anyone, in addition to those that are sent in directly to IBADS for establishment and registration. BGI does not have that obligation.
Thank you Alistair.
Yes, Thank you Alistar. That's good information to have, and makes sense too. Does that mean that
BGI has the power to reject? That would be good in case of duplication.
Both IBADS and BGI should reject names submitted to them which do not comply with the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants, or advise the person that the name would be rejected and suggest they change it. This might occur, as you say, with duplicate names, or in cases where a new name is too similar to an existing one.
In a case where there was a dispute (e.g. If it was not clear whether one name was too similar to another or not) the ICRA has the role and authority to make a decision based on the nomenclatural rules, and publish that determination to make it binding.
Such instances are extremely rare in Brugmansia.
I love BGI. Very informative.
Thank you, Mr. Hay .. :)
thank you everyone. i love any website that mentions brugs, has any info about them and/or shows pictures of them.
i am addicted.
