We have a John Deere 755 diesel tractor, and I need a 3 point rototiller for it. If I can find one in time, I hope to plant in a 100' x 100' corn patch this year, which will have a certain number of rows of corn planted every week or two.
~ What I don't know is what brands of rototillers are known for making excellent 3 point rototillers?
~ I know they come in different sizes, but other than that, are they all brands about the same in quality, performance, and ease of use, or are they all different?
~ Are there features that I should make sure my rototiller has?
My soil is a clay mixture and has had wheat, soy, and alfalfa grown on it; a dairy farmer rents the majority of our land to grow one of the three crops. The land does have some rocks about the size of softballs and smaller but not in great abundance. Before a new crop is planted, the field workers make 1 trip across the field (walking) to pick up any rocks they find......if that gives you clues about how rocky the soil is.
Any thoughts on what I should look for in a 3 point rototiller would be appreciated. We've never owned one before and are trying to glean as much info about them as quickly as we can.
Thanks for your help.

Are all 3-point rototillers the same?
Glenda,
I'm not an expert, but I'll offer my two cents. The tillers are NOT the same. There are tillers that have more durable construction, better design, easier use, etc. Some similarly priced tillers have a max depth of 4 inches, while others will go to 8 inches.
Here's a comparison of a few similar 3-point tillers available from Northern Tool. You can click on the product names across the top for more product information.

Also, there is another website, TractorByteNet that has forums for everything tractor. There is a forum specifically for attachments. Here is a link to a list of recent topics about 3-point tillers. You may find better information there.

Agreed, there are light duty, medium duty and heavy duty machines available. The major thing I would look for in your conditions is a PTO slip clutch. If you have rocks, you will be replacing shear pins frequently on a cheap tiller. I would start with your John Deere dealer, who can best match your tractor. 100 x 100 is not much space, so if you are not going to be working large acreage, you can let price dictate your selection to some extent. The 755 is only rated at 15 HP PTO so you will be looking at small models. John Deere offers two 42 inch models RT 1140 and RT 1240 that are rated for 15 PTO HP. (the 755 has a 20 HP Yanmar engine) King cutter makes a 48 inch model but it might be too much for your machine.
Farmerdill & David, I sure do appreciate your input. Your info is exactly what I needed to head in the right direction. I'll print off your posts and take them with me when I go tiller shopping. There's so much to learn and research before making a purchase; nothing worse that buying the wrong piece of equipment.
Thanks guys!
Glenda :)
