Can I put lava rock in my sand filter .Presently use filter mats but they clog up weekly. use for mechanical filtration only. Have bio filter at another location

Yes, you can. I have done it for many, many years. The only problem is the weight when you have to do a thorough cleaning. I have changed to using hair rollers that you can buy in many stores. Those are cheap, light weight and to me easier to clean. Hope this helps.
