2011 - ONIONS

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

has anyone tried onions in containers? ima thinking on trying to do some and goign to use sopme ammended horse poo.

Whats your secret to those gorgeous big onions?

I sunk a large clay container in the garden to keep the onions contained. I was told they would take over the garden otherwise. I've been harvesting nice, tasty onions for months and can tell you that shortly after adding some fresh home-brewed compost, those onions really took off. Tripled at least. They also like a lot of water.

I'm sure gymgirl has!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

LOL! Well I just filled a huge pile of nursery cans with some nice ammended horse poo..
I think this afternoon ima gonna plop them little onion starts in them and go for ut.

Gonna try a few stalks of sweet corn, some beans and some raddish too. not it the same pots, but it will give me some more room in the garden to let melons and sqaush roam!

Guess we will have to tune in later to see how this fun goes!

I have broccoli and brussel sproes in some big cans too..

Last year I did marigolds this way and they were 5 feet tall! ANd my maters did well too.

I cant seem to grow onions or corn for sqwat here. So maybe this is my ticket!

I was thinking to try using a kiddie pool... poke some holes in the botton for drainage and put them onions inthere.. but I ahve not been able to scronge a pool up.

Someone called my name?

As a matter of fact, I'm growing REAL bulb onions in 4 patented Earthboxes, as we speak, and for the first time.

They were planted on January 8th from onion plants from Dixondale farms. I have Granex 1015, Red onions and White onions (they were the sampler pack).

To date, after protecting them from the deep chills we had a couple times or so, I managed to rip out a couple of the babes so, from 120 planted, I think I have approximately 80+ still growing on.

Couple of observations:
►They ARE water hogs, once they get going. Don't wanna water the babies too much, too soon and rot them before they're established, but, keep the soil evenly moist.

►They stay HUNGRY! So, regular feedings of high phosphorous fertilizer is very necessary. I'm feeding mine once a week, sprinkling a light layer of phosphorous from a tablespoon over the soil, then watering it in

►They need protection from the WIND! These unseasonable (for us in Houston) Texas windstorms are causing me severe grief! I can't keep the plants growing vertically. Right now, they're growing almost horizontal to the soil, and the roots have taken, so, I'm not about to try to turn them upright at this point. Live and learn!

►They need SUNSHINE! Yep, they were fine under the patio cover for about a minute after I planted them, but then they started languishing. I started them under the patio cover because I didn't want the rainstorms we were having to beat them to death before they got established. Once they were, I got them out into the full sun, and they started greening up really nicely

►The bulbs are starting to get FAT! Patience is called for when growing onions (and certain long-season tomatoes that can take for-EV-er!) This is a slow process, but I'm so desperate to grow full-size onions I'm willing to tough it out. I can see them swelling up, even with the abuse they've gone through. So, I'll just keep on watering, feeding, loving, and praying over them. I hear 5-6 months is the approximate time from planting to harvesting....sheesh!

Now. Who was it who called my name, again?

(It always tickles me when I see my name referenced in the Garden!) ^^_^^

Hugs!

Im thinking chicken poo tea here.. are you thinking too rich?

Um, I don't know anything about the chicken poo doo. Check the contents online. Onions need high phosphorus, not nitrogen...

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

hmmmm.. them chickies are high nitro.. dont need ot "flame throw" the fun-yuns!

Dont think diluting it would be a benefit...that wont change the make up of that poo.

It does work excellent on mums though!

Hamilton, ON(Zone 5b)

Haha, I knew you'd be around, Gymgirl. Always see you talking about those darn earthboxes. I'm assuming that since you always say they're patented that you hold the patents for them, yes? Lol. You're an expert on the topic, nonetheless.

BTW, chicken poo tea sounds disgusting!

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Lorvan!
No, I do NOT hold the patents. I say "patented" to distinguish from the homemade eBoxes and eBuckets that I also use extensively. Generally the abbreviations are as follows, but not so many folks understand them. Maybe, if I used them more, it would become more universally applied:

EB = patented Earthboxes
HEBs = homemade earthboxes, generall 18+ gallon Sterilite/Rubbermaid tubs
eBuckets = self-watering buckets (usually understood to be a 5+-gallon bucket
ePlanters = retrofitted 24" planters converted to self-watering vessels like eBuckets
eTubs = any other tub-like container, converted to a self-watering vessel

That's all folks! ^^_^^

Linda

P.S. At the rate the eBuckets are being built, I think I'd like stock in them!

haha, Gymgirl... this reminds me of a friend who tried to convince me to buy stock in Google about 10 years ago. Wish I had...
Thanks for the translations.
I don't normally put any veggies in containers cuz I have just under an acre property... but I love putting herbs in pots near the kitchen door so I can run out real quick while I'm cooking... (somehow the potatoes still always boil over :S)

BLOSSOMBUDDY,

You sure that wasn't a picture of *my* onions from last year? I thought I was the only one who had a lousy crop of them. Planted sets, and a few of them barely even sized up to what I started with.

MaryMcP,

What kind of onions are you growing that could take over the garden?

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

I dunno.....they came from a friend. They are like the green onions you buy at the store. I think he called them 'clumping onions', if that helps.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Uh, they might be "Walking" onions if they're moving through the yard.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Interesting onion gymgirl but it's not the one I have. I'll check with the friend who gave them to me and see if I can get a better name.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Nah, cyb, those were definetly mine..

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, this AM I finished potting the onions.. did some where they had room to grow a good bulb and then did some tight so that they would go to"grass" on top for nibbling. Need a couple of bags of potting dirt to go on top of the "poo" hoping that will keep the weeds frmi the manure down.
