I planted 3 Berlandiera lyrata last fall and they came up just fine. I have them in full sun and a raised bed that is often dry. The plants are not really growing and the leaves look yellowish. Basically it just looks unhappy to me. Does anyone near me grow these and if so any advice? There are a few flowers on them. I also have a penstemon psuedospecta? in the same area and it also looks poorly.

Will take pics when I get home before dark!

OK, I think I can answer my own question LOL. After looking around the most likely cause is lack of N. I find that a little hard to believe but the bed is sandy and hasn't really been fertilized in anyway for about 3 years. Any suggestions? There is still a small amount of cedar mulch on top. Can I add a little art. fert. on top and then cover with some hardwood mulch?

Buy some cottonseed meal, it is about $12 per 40 pound bag and it is high in nitrogen.
Sprinkle some around the root area put the mulch back and water, it works great.

I think I have seen that for sale. Can I sprinkle it lightly all over the bed and then cover with fresh mulch?

Yeas you can, it works very well, they have it at most feed stores.
