how to store daff bulbs long term?

springfield area, MO(Zone 5b)

I have several hundred daffs that I am digging up today. They are just done blooming, and I want to dig them while I can still kind of tell what they are so I can label them.
I know to leave the foliage on, and I will cut off the blossom so it wont made seed.
Next though, what is the best way to store them for say 6 months or longer maybe?
I am moving and I want to bring them with me, but it might be awhile before they get replanted. I have some shoe boxes. I thought after I dig them I can lay them out until the foliage dies back, cut that off, and then put them in the shoe box? Will they dry out though? Wondered if I should take them out once a month or ? and soak them overnight in some water? or mist them?
thanks for any tips!

FrillyLily,
I have never dug them and tried to store them for months, but I have over-ordered bulbs and just gotten so tired of planting....I left them in a box and they sat in a outside building all winter and they were still ok. I planted them and I had pretty good results with bloom. I know that the longer you store them, the less likely they will be good and hardy just like flowerseed as it gets older.
I found this website that tells you how to store them and I would also suggest that you might be able to store them on window screens set up to allow air to flow all around. It seems the trick is to keep them good and dry...don't wash the dirt off of them when you dig them...just let it dry and brush it off.
Here's a link...and hope they make it for you.

thank you for the link!
I dug them and they are laying outside right now, I guess I should bring them in. :)
I am going to store them for a while and see how they do. Glad to hear that others store them through the summer months.

Hi, Frillylilly,

Good info for digging and storing daff bulbs: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/bulbs/msg1019351223989.html

Your question piqued my interest and so I did a little googl-ing myself. I didn't read Nana's ehow link above, but I did find this rather complete answer on GardenWeb that others might find useful for digging and storing. This link gives several different methods for successful storage.

The one thing that caught my eye about your first post was that it sounds like you dug your bulbs before the foliage died back then placed them out to dry. It is my understanding that the live foliage needs to drink up all the sunshine and nutrients from the garden to make a nice fat bulb for next year, if that is so, I wonder how that bulb growth will occur having dug the bulbs and left them to dry so soon after bloom...?

I will be interested to hear how your project turns out. I know it's always a challenge to try to move parts of your garden when you move house! Good luck. t.
