Xeno,
did you ever notice that a M. duwei sometimes grows hooked central spines and sometimes not, just depending on growing conditions?
So I think the entry of M. duwei var. longispina is unnecessary and should be deleted.
Even you posted the other M. duwei photo from this Phoenix show in the entry of the 'normal' M. duwei, though this plant also has several hooked centrals.

That M. duwei var. longispina page would have to be changed anyway because it has been reclassified as a subspecies of M. crinita and *would* technically be entitled M. crinita subsp. duweii var. longispina. But I have already sent in a report to have the two pages combined.
And No, I do not think it is because of 'growing conditions'. The more likely and reasonable explanation would be that each seed is already genetically predispositioned to grow either No spines or to grow some spines. Of which I have seen many happen many times before with similar cacti. All of the seedlings were subjected to the same 'growing conditions' and yet they turned out to be different.

Yes, of course, there is also a tendency in the genes to grow more or fewer central spines. But that is in the range of the given variability and I haven't seen any duwei yet which didn't grow some hooked centrals when grown under hard (hot, sun, dry) conditions.
