Do Chickens eat roses?

Salem, OR(Zone 8b)

Hi! I'm a newbie with poultry. Just planning out how much free range territory I'll be giving my new chickens. (Day 12 of eggs inside my incubator). And I'm wondering if chickens eat roses, since my rose garden will be in somewhat in their vicinity.

Thanks!!!!

And, expanding that question---are there any plants that are toxic to chickens such as those that are toxic to humans......digitalis, baptisia, etc? Or are the chickens smart enough to avoid eating what is dangerous to them?

Welcome to the DG Forum. They might eat roses if there are buggs on them but I think they are pretty safe otherwise. Chickens might not seem very bright but they are excellent foragers, and also excellent at leaving things alone that are not good for them. I'm glad you joined us and am sure you will have a great time as those feathered friends teach you about who they are. This is an excellent forum and hope you will frequent often...Haystack...

Chickens are more likely to dig up the beds than eat the roses; they love to scratch in soft dirt and hunt for goodies beneath.

This is good news......they will be getting more space to roam as a result!
