aquaponics anyone?

Carrollton, TX(Zone 8a)

I first posted this in the Tomatoes Forum and got no responses so I was wondering if no one was interested or no one saw it, so I will try again just in case it was the latter of the two.

“I've been wanting to start a new forum on aquaponics since I recently learned a little about it. If it was opened as a thread topic I don’t know in which forum it would belong. When I searched Dave's Garden forums I found very few posts on the topic, a few in the Hydroponics forum (it has its own forum) and in the Australian Gardening forum (I hear that it is popular in Australia). I don’t know how you start a new forum, probably requires administrative approval, but I’m sure someone will educate me.”

I am just adding this (thanks to Wikipedia): “Aquaponics (pronounced: /ˈćkwəˈpɒnɨks/) is a sustainable food production system that combines a traditional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. In the aquaculture, effluents accumulate in the water, increasing toxicity for the fish. This water is led to a hydroponic system where the by-products from the aquaculture are filtered out by the plants as vital nutrients, after which the cleansed water is recirculated back to the animals. The term aquaponics is a portmanteau of the terms aquaculture and hydroponic.”

In the indoor setup I saw a couple of weeks back vegetables and herbs were being grown in the hydroponic bed and trout were being grown in the aquaculture, although tilapia and catfish do very well in this system. If I end up doing it I would like to combine growing prawns (fresh water shrimp) and mushrooms, if possible.
