2011 TATER TIME!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

March 17th we planted Kennebecs and Red Pontiacs the conventional way, in the dirt and in rows..

Today we planted Yukon Golds in "luminarias"!.. well not really, but they sure look like it! They are in old feed sacks with the bottoms cut out of them "sleeved" down to half size and so later as they grow we will add more compost and "pull up " their sleeeves!

Never tried this but one of the seed companies was offering a sack of some description and so we got the idea from that.. We shall see how this works.

We filled our sacks with straight horse poo. Its not too rich so this ought to be intersting!

I like your idea. Not sure about straight manure. That seems like a lot of shoveling. Would love to hear how it turns out.

aWW.. the shoveling was easy... the old man did it! LOL! I just poked the taters in.. got a few more to do, but this is a first. the bed to the right is taters just planted in the ground the usual way.. those went in March 17th...got Kenebecs and red pontiacs there..

Besides that the barn needed cleaning so it was the thing to do. The poo is not real rich.. most of the nutiens have been filtered through.. so well anyway, as we pull up the sacks we will add more poo. The thing Im not liking is watering.. I hate dragging hoses.

So hows your taters going?
