Greetings:
I finally got around to paying for a subscription, so now I can actually see posts here - *smiling*
I saw a hummingbird once up in Orlando when I was a child, but I haven't seen one since, and I'm 40!
Can hummingbirds live in this South Florida heat?
If so, what kind of habitat do they need? I have veggies growing on south side of house, but my backyard is pretty much barren, so I can plant whatever I want. Any suggestions? Do they need a bird bath, special house? I know they drink the red stuff out of a bird feeder. I tried that a few years ago to lure them, and all I got were wasps, bees, and dragon flies.
I do know we have some blue jays, some sort of black bird or crow (obnoxious as heck), and some other brown and black bird. I've seen what I think is a sparrow from time to time....all I know is it's small.
So any advice would help.
thanks.
Do Hummingbirds live in South Florida?
awww, I think you may be right. so, hummingbirds would travel down during fall (august-october) up north, right? So, start laying out the hummingbird food around then, eh?
well, I saw a woodpecker in my back yard this morning - guess I'll just have to pamper him, then.....
Some people report them in Central Florida all year, but I mainly see them winter and spring, and relatively few at that. I think you are in a fly zone for birds heading further South for the winter. You might see some if you put up a feeder.
I have them here in Palm Coast through Spring and Summer... nesting in the trees. we had them So. Flo ( Palm Beach Gardens)as well, because my grandmother put out feeders all season and we would watch them in the early evenings.
Sofla,
Your in the perfect place to induce Hummingbirds. But first you have to have a good menu, and something for the diners to notice you.Coral honeysuckel and firebush are sure things in our neck of the woods.Mexican sage also and let the stuff spread. It may take a few years for the plants to get big enough to produce enough nectar for the flying jewels to say to themselfs hey there is enough here to hang for awhile.Once they do hang they remember year after year. One word ,be sure to put the plants near the window you can see them from early morning and just before sundown or you may never notice them.I believe this to be true ,that there is more hummingbirds going unnoticed at yards that are planted just for them just because they (the people) don't look at the right times.
I've spent alot of dough on all sorts of hummingbird plants and some they have tried, but the Honeysuckle and the firebush and the sage are by far their most favorite. Don
