What is This?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We've lived here for 6 years now and we've seen these things grow, but they've never bloomed. I thought it was nut grass. LOL One bloomed today, so it's obviously not nut grass!! What is it? What are the optimal growing conditions for it? When's the best time to move them?

I believe that will be a Louisiana iris.

I have similar (whitish blooms) but don't know what it is either. Did a quick search for dietes iris, which maybe close.

I too have a very similar one that has never bloomed ,but on a hiking trip in the high country(sierra) I saw lots of those or a close relative and like you mine were here when I bought this place(2000) So it could be that someone brought those home with them from who knows where and it took the cold of the past winter to trigger the bloom responce....I don't know but that sounds like a good tale LOL

This is a "Louisiana" iris that I brought from my Grandmother's yard. I don't know where she got it but it has spread and blooms like crazy. Is very similar to yours. The leaves on mine get pretty tall.
